Review of Dead Man Walking (1995) by Paul J — 04 Aug 2015
"Dead Man Walking" is a phenomenal achievement. Never have I ever seen such an in depth display of a man on death row. Sean Penn amazes me, he really does. He is without a doubt one of the best actors of all time.
I mean look at his track record and you know the man knows how to pick his movies. Maybe not recently with "The Gunman," but I'm willing to let that one slide. But his performance as Matthew Poncelet, is definitely one of his all time career best performances, as Sean Penn is so truly believable in the role.
He was nominated or an Academy Award for his performance as Best Actor, and he rightfully deserved it. Susan Sarandon is excellent in the movie as well as the nun who tries to help Sean Penn's character seek redemption before he is executed by the death penalty for his crimes.
But the real shock for me is the fact that Tim Robbins who we all know from "The Shawshank Redemption," directed this movie and you really feel while watching the movie that this was definitely well put together, and that the man behind the camera knows what he is doing, and Tim Robbins certainly shows that.
Overall this is definitely one of the best films of the 1990's as "Dead Man Walking" is a movie to not be missed, as you will literally feel by the end of it that a part of you was there in the room watching Sean Penn's final moments before his execution is carried out.
