Review of Dead Man Down (2013) by Cristian B — 19 Mar 2013
A flawed and uneven crime drama that is well-acted. Director Oplev blends an off-beat character-driven romance with a standard revenge story. The result doesn't always gel convincingly. There is solid work from the ensemble.
Farrell and Rapace display considerable chemistry and intrigue. Cooper and Howard are effective in supporting roles. The movie feels at war with itself at times. The first half is more interesting because it's about the central characters and their odd connection, which creates a moody atmosphere.
Unfortunately, the second half dissolves into the usual crime formula. Despite its flaws, thanks to the main performances and its off-kilter romance, the movie gets a semi-pass.
