Review of Dead Man (1995) by Sam A — 03 Aug 2008
The most bizarre and surreal Western film. It's the anti-Western Western, and who better to star than Johnny Depp and who better to direct than Jim Jarmusch. And what better way to record it than on scratchy, grainy black and white film.
At once surreal (fade-ins supreme), dark (head stomping?) and hilarious (Iggy Pop), Dead Man may be the best pseudo-Western since Straight to Hell.
Jim Jarmusch always films in this insouciant, meandering manner that can be thought of as boring but is more hypnotic in my opinion. He's one of the better directors to come out of that indie pack in the 80's.
