Review of Dead Man (1995) by Ty C — 27 Oct 2008
One of my favorite movies now. Unexpected and brilliant and unlike anything I've ever seen before. Full of amazing detail, this movie was crazily researched, and is renowned for being one of the most realistic depictions of native americans ever made, even though it is wrapped within a farcical kind of dark comedy.
The movie is so powerful though by the end and will drag you into it in so many different ways. Just when you might start to be feeling like you are gonna get bored by the story there is some kooky hilarious encounter that resonates through the storyline and Johnny Depp is of course awesome with that kind of innocent yet desperate demeanor of the accountant from Cleveland that is in way over his head in a world run amuck.
One of the best depictions of early America and our thoughtless murderous ways. It is very subtle, and it probably didn't do this intentionally since it was made in '95, but it has a lot to do with what's going on in America today (i.
E. George Bush/Iraq and environment/global warming).
