Review of Dead Man (1995) by Rune B — 23 Aug 2009
This is a very strange movie, probably why I say Depp is strange but in a good way, he chooses very odd roles. Neil Young's music for this movie sets the tone for this dark and somewhat poetic outsiders view on a world he enters into. The film is black and white, and see alot of frame shots, where its more like just seeing moving images/flashes of things through William Blake's eyes (played by Depp) he meets this indian who befriends him and once again you get into this poetic type dark view of what is taking place.
This is a movie that you will probably appreciate or hate, it will not suite the taste of all that is for sure. I found it strangly intriqueing, but can't really escape the word strange and purhaps especially at some points disturbing, and some slight humor but everything has a dark tone and the ending once again strange and poetic. I find it very hard to describe this film, purhaps if I was a film maker I could give a better perspective.
Will say this much if you watch it just because you think Depp is cute, you probably won't like it, or be impressed much, but if your watching it because you love versatile roles, westerns, poetry, and Depp for his acting ability, then you may feel differently.
