Review of Dead Man (1995) by Alex T — 23 Oct 2009
A little too inscrutable. I dare you to watch it and have any clear idea what it's about. Indeed, you can't even really tell if it's Johnny Depp's William Blake or Gary Farmer's Nobody who is the central character.
But the most immediate, superficial aspects - the stark black-and-white minimalism, Depp's beautifully restrained performance, Farmer's over-the-top one, Neil Young's haunting one-take soundtrack, the Kurosawa-esque gunfights - are still redeeming enough to make a first viewing worthwhile and a second worthy.
