Review of Dead Man (1995) by Amice L — 15 Jul 2010
Haunting in its mixture of the surreal and the almost too-real. Dead Man is a must see (several times) film. Gary Farmer is amazing, and it seems like the long-line of cameos or unexpected actors is the result of ever-increasing casting brilliance. The appearance of Iggy Pop and Billy Bob Thornton are perfect examples.
It is difficult for me to properly critique this film that I was so affected by, but admittedly felt more than understood. In addition to the script and scene progessions, the cinematography must be singled out for its particular brilliance. It makes a compelling arguement that no film set in the "Old West" should be filmed in anything but black and white. It actually seems more real this way, because such a place and time never really existed save for in our dreamy fantasy of what it should all mean.
