Review of Dead Man (1995) by Morten N — 15 Dec 2011
4: This is without a doubt one of the craziest and most unique westerns out there, but this is exactly what one would expect from Jarmusch. The black and white photography is key to getting the mood right, especially since I doubt the production values could have handled color.
Depp gives a characteristically adept and enigmatic performance as William Blake's alter-ego, reincarnation, or personification. The only western I can think to compare the blatant authenticity, filth, and vileness depicted herein to is the HBO series Deadwood.
This is a version of the west we are somewhat unfamiliar with, or at least we are being shown it from an angle we are unaccustomed to. Brilliant revisionism.
