Review of Dead Man (1995) by Mark S — 23 Feb 2012
This has to be one of Johnny Depp's very best performances. In these days of average Tim Burton collaborations and numerous Pirates sequels, it reminds me why in the 90s I used to be such a big fan of his.
As Mark Kermode pointed out about his acting in this film, Depp is like a film star from a different era, giving here what could pass as a great silent film performance. Every movement and look is considered and well executed.
His transformation from city wet lettuce to savage gunfighter is entirely convincing. The look of the film, combined with Neil Young's sparse soundtrack, is intriguing, as is the supporting cast, with screen legends such as Robert Mitchum and John Hurt appearing only briefly but adding a lot.
