Review of Dead Man (1995) by Joseph S — 26 Jun 2008
Jim Jarmusch western with Johnny Depp which I long avoided out of some strange prejudice I had about westerns, but which was ridiculously good, in it's perfomances, dialogue, and direction. I liked Jarmusch before, but I have a renewed respect for hi.
..(read more)m as filmmaker after this. The Niel Young music reminded me alot of Inarritu as well, but I thought got a little repetitive. Still it was alot more funny, clever, and daring than most westerns.
The story is about an average man named William Blake(no relation), who get's mixed up in a crazy town called Machine, leaving him nearly dead, and hunted by bounty hunters, till he meets an educated Indian who beleives him to be the re-incarnation of the poet William Blake, returned to kill white men, till his soul can be sent to sea in a canoe.
..what follows is a odyssey through the at times bizzare, others remarkably realistic old west. A little slow at first, but well worth the time. Dont let the black and white throw you off, it's modern and it's very much worth your time.
