Review of Dead Man (1995) by Robin W — 05 May 2013
A revisionist western shot in all black and white in which we get to follow the journey of William Blake and native american Exaybachay, aka Nobody. Both Johnny Depp and Gary Farmer delivers outstanding performances and as they travel through incredible landscapes the viewer is presented with some stunning visuals.
The film has alot of references to poet William Blake, the most obvious of course is the main characters name, but also some of his poetry is qouted most of it by Exaybachay and the scenes with the character Thel, acts out his poem "The Sick Rose" in a brilliant way.
Many native american critics have praised this film for depicting native americans in a very accurate and non-stereotypical fashion. Doubtlessly this is one of the best revisionist westerns ever made.
