Review of Dead Like Me: Life After Death (2009) by Pete A — 24 Feb 2009
Not a good idea. We all wanted to see Rube get his "lights," and that would have been the best story for this movie, but with Mandy Patinkin declining to participate, that just wasn't an option. The "slick new head reaper" alternative is corny but passable; unfortunately, the characters react as though they'd never grown up. Fortunately, Jasmine Guy and Ellen Muth are still wonderful, Callum Blue at least seems to be having fun, and the plotline developing Reggie's character is roughly sketched but not without merit. It's the head reaper who seems most out of place -- he's made out to be almost Satanic, and the way the characters eventually deal with him seems way over the top -- and frankly the plot would have worked just as well without him.
So -- not a patch on the TV series, but not a total desecration of its memory. Kinda makes me want to rewatch the real thing.
