Review of Dead Birds (2005) by Andrew M — 12 May 2008
The Bad: unfortunate but minimal use of CGI, the third act feels rushed and kind of falls apart, the monster reveal comes too early (though it does so for narrative reasons), use of gore is sometimes cartoonish (mostly in the bank robbery scene), and the majority of the main cast look like they wandered in fresh from their high school prom. The most of the scares are simply jumpers with musical stingers.
The Good: An awesome back story and intriguing setting that requires you to use some thought to piece together exactly what's going on (even if some threads are left hanging). Even if it's all jump scares it's damn nice looking jump scares (minus aforementioned CGI sequences) with fantastic monster design. Acting is mostly solid.
All in all, despites its hiccups this movie is highly enjoyable, especially compared to what passes as a modern horror film. Watch it.
