Review of Dead & Buried (1981) by Michael K — 06 Dec 2007
Not quite a zombie film and not quite a slasher movie. This is a unique hybrid of different cinematic conventions, most prominently the "small town sherrif investigating a stange series of deaths" scenario.
Beautifully fog-filtered coastal cinematography high-lights this atmospheric shocker. One of the more chilling aspects on display are the raw footage, black and white 8MM movies shot by one of the killers.
They have a very creepy realistic documentary feel that pre-date both HENRY and BLAIR WITCH in the snuff movie simulation category. Creative carnage set-pieces, top notch performances, and very clever writing set this one apart and above.
To this day, it is still the high-water mark for twist endings, coming a full twenty years prior to the suppoedly brilliant and original "The Sixth Sense". Awesome.
