Review of Dead Again (1991) by Jared M — 20 Mar 2008
This extremely original story manages to remain original while it pays homage to the great films noir of the past. Jockeying back and forth between the past and the present, the film uses the styles of film noir, even when the movie changes from black and white to colour. Patrick Doyle's score perfectly segues from the eras as well, bringing unity to the storyline and to the characters, being played in both eras by the stars.
With lots of twists and turns, with great surprises in the plot and an unbilled appearance by Robin Williams, the film is pure entertainment, through and through.
Especially wonderful (and, believe me, I think all of this movie is wonderful!!) are Derek Jacobi and (in a small but delightful role, looking beautiful as ever) Christine Ebersole.
If you are watching the dvd, I greatly recommend watching it with Branagh's commentary: one of the most entertaining I have heard yet.
