Review of Dead Again (1991) by Anupama S — 19 Aug 2009
An entertaining mystery/thriller detective story, about love and reincarnation. I'm quite certain this is one of the coolest movies I've seen.
The casting does seem a bit odd at first, but came together nicely for me. Especially with how attracted I found myself to Emma Thompson in this role, surprising. And Robin Williams very short role, is hysterical.
Keep in mind, I am probably one of the few people that can actually dig this early 90's classic. It doesn't seem like too many flixters enjoyed this one.
What I loved the most, was the way the flashback scenes were very reminiscent of the 1940's noir theme. The wardrobe, the incessant smoking (with actually an interesting effect on Andy Garcia's character). We flash back and forth between the present day, to hear a story that starts in a past life, and a murder mystery that is passed on to the next generation. Very weird at times, and kind of far-fetched, granted. But smartly executed, and very provocative. I think Kenneth Branagh deserves props for this film.
"How many times can you die for love?".
