Review of Dead Again (1991) by David S — 22 Feb 2012
Such brilliance in the scripting, the concept, some of the acting - but it's disjointed, lurching from set-piece stereotype to TV-drama descending to soap. Lots of 'englishness' to appeal to the americans, every touch of suspense or mystique destroyed by simplistic and patronising simplification.
But although brilliance from one star is not enough, Thompson's performance is outstanding, carrying the dross with its diamond-lustre.
The spectres ghoulishly gather in the Addams Family left-over set, all that's missing is Vincent Price. Crude flashback, interesting juxtaposition of colour stock and black&white, this film torments by alternating brilliance with banality. It's psycho-horror all right - of the cinematic torture kind.
