Review of De-Lovely (2004) by Bright V — 31 Aug 2004
The best part about De-Lovely is Ashley Judd's performance. This is the best role she has played to date, and I think she will be mentioned this Oscar season.
Otherwise, I did not enjoy this movie at all. First, the make-up department did a bad job. It must be difficult to make younger actors look as though they were aging. And in some scenes the makeup was just to distracting. I think instead of piling makeup on young actors to make them look old - it is better to just hire a young actor and an old actor who look similar. The makeup was one thing that ruined the movie for me.
The story of Cole Porter is interesting. I think it could have been told better. Instead the movie just played out like a soap opera, showing disfunctional behavior between a husband and wife. Judd's character Linda, marries Klines character, Cole Porter and tells him that he can have his boyfriends on the side. But when he spends so much time with his male interests, she gets depressed and sad. I think there could have been a much more interesting and romantic story to tell about this couple.
All that being said, if you want to see an amazing performance by an actress, see this movie for Ashley Judd's performance. She out-shined everything else in this movie. .
