Review of De-Lovely (2004) by Mel M — 02 Jan 2005
Insomnia strikes.
CARMEN JONES (1954).
First off, I love the story of Carmen and I LOVE Bizet's music. So I was quite excited for this. It starts off well, the beginning is really great. Dorothy Dandridge is one of the most beautiful women ever and capable of pulling off Carmen, although I was quite disappointed to learn that she and Belafanote are dubbed. It stays its course pretty well and then it has a fantastic scene at the bar.
But after this scene, Joe comes home from jail. Everything starts to go sour for him at that point and the film goes sour as well. I don't know what it is. Maybe it just got too modern for me. But as the movie dragged on, I realized that I was a lot more attached to that THE LOVES OF CARMEN with Glenn Ford and Rita Hayworth than I ever imagined. Or maybe I just couldn't help but compare, I don't know.
It's okay, it has good music, but its overlong and seems to lose its course.
DE-LOVELY (2004).
I started to cry about ten minutes into the film, if that says anything.
I'll just say one more thing though: DE-LOVELY = beautiful.
I can't comment on the accuracy, but really, its beautiful. So I've got two more biopics to see (BEYOND THE SEA and RAY) and then I think its time for a biopic break. Although now I'm fairly intrested in seeing NIGHT AND DAY.
