Review of De-Lovely (2004) by Eric R — 02 Sep 2007
I normally don't fancy musicals, but I like to keep an open mind. If ever, I will only watch a musical if either the movie would be just as good without the music (Ray, O Brother Where Art Thou), or the music is so good that I don't care about stuff like acting or plot (Grease, An American in Paris, Singin' In The Rain). Of course, since I have several older friends and relatives who like musicals, I've seen quite a few of them where both the movie and the music are just plain bad (Phantom Of The Opera, Chicago).
Which brings us to today's lunch time musical indulgement: De-Lovely. This is the first musical I have seen where both the music and the filmmaking are so good, it turned my lunch of the usual fare into a steak dinner. Though, it doesn't hurt that all the songs are written by the Cole Porter, Broadway's finest composer and the subject of the movie. Although the plays and films he composed these music for have been forgotten, the songs from them remain immortal in our hearts. One surprise for me was the song True Love; I never knew Cole Porter wrote it.
De-Lovely is the first musical I've seen that I really liked and where I also found myself humming and even singing (yikes!) along to. Makes you thank your lucky stars I don't audio blog.
