Review of De-Lovely (2004) by Catherine C — 25 Feb 2008
Kevin Kline and Ashley Judd both give stellar performances in this biopic about American composer Cole Porter and his wife and muse Linda Lee. The device of making Cole Porter reflect on his life as if he was looking at one of his musicals is a smart one - given the complexity of his relationship with Linda Lee, he often wasn't sure what he really felt until perhaps years later, in retrospect.
But the pleasure of this movie is really in the glamour of the jazz age and the songs. And what songs, given the star studded cameos! Robbie Williams, Alanis Morissette and Natalie Cole absolutely steamed up the screen when they came on.
De-Lovely is lovely indeed, especially when you're a jazz fan.
