DC League of Super-Pets is a second DC animated movie made by Warner Animation Group with the first being 2017’s The Lego Batman Movie. Unlike the other DC animated and live-action movies, this movie focused on Legion of Super-Pets, which is not known to many people outside of comic books fanbase.
The movie begins with the destruction of Krypton where young Kal-El was transported to Earth in a space pod along with his pet dog, Krypto (Johnson), who have been task by Kal-El’s parent to look after him. Years later, Kal-El now goes by the name of Clark Kent and become a famous superhero known as Superman alongside Krypto, going by the name of Superdog in Metropolis.
As time goes, Clark Kent/Superman begins dating Lois Lane and plan to propose her which cause Krypto to become jealous and fear he will not be needed anymore but unaware of his propose to her. While this happens, Lex Luthor attempts to steal an orange kryptonite to gain superpower for himself but the Justice League foils his plan. One of the shards falls into the hands of Lulu (McKinnon), a guinea pig who was once a test subject by Luthor and now living in an animal shelter.
The orange kryptonite gives Lulu a superpower and capture Superman in order to gain favour from Luthor while Krypto lost his power after accidentally eat a cheese laced with kryptonite set up by Lulu. Without power, Krypto is unable to rescue his owner until he meets another group of animals from the same animal shelter Lulu was in. Led by Ace (Hart) the dog, he along with the other animals have superpowers due to exposure to the same orange kryptonite. Under Krypto’s leadership, they have to work together to save Superman and stop Lulu before it is too late.
What makes this DC animated movie different from the others is this movie focused on animal superheroes, something which have not or rarely explored in a feature film. What is even better is while this movie may be children’s movie but this movies have great character developments for the main characters. Well-known and popular superheroes like Superman and Batman are given supporting roles and never steal any spotlights from their animal counterparts.
The plot of the movie is simple enough to understand and not too complicated. Additionally, the animation is great and the humours are enjoyable. Unlike 2020’s Scoob!, this movie do not put too much focus on setting up for next movie and instead the movie put more effort on the story first before anything else. The casts did a great job in their voice performance especially Dwayne Johnson, Kevin Hart and Keanu Reeves. Dwayne and Kevin have great friendship chemistry even in voice acting. Although he does not have a big role in the movie, Keanu does a great in voicing Batman and provided a best comic relief character.
This may not be the best animated movie in general but the movie is still great for all ages. If you plan to spend time watching movie with your children, give this movie a try. Be sure to stay back for a mid-credits scene because there are unexpected characters in that scene and also served as a tease for future instalments.
