Review of DC League of Super-Pets (2022) by Jluis_001 — 01 Aug 2022
Everyone knows the target audience for this film. And there are many moments where it feels like you're watching The Secret Life of Pets, but with the clear addition of DC's most famous superheroes to get more of a boost at the box office. So get an idea of what you're going to see if you decide to watch it. DC League of Super-Pets is a sort of funny but weak effort that relies on the voices that bring these characters to life and evidently the more famous characters it features. Let's face it, this film wouldn't get the same attention if it weren't for the fact that Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman and other superheroes make an appearance. Constant appearances.
The animals are the main attraction, of course, but that helping dose is all this movie relies on to grab the audience, kids and adults alike. What works best is within the established formula of the superhero genre, beyond that there is an imbalance between the humor that has to do with the pets and the references that appear along the way. The mix is clearly absurd and the film doesn't come off very well in terms of balance, substance and consistency, but like many other recent animated films, the studios know that this won't be a problem for the kids. And frankly I get it. No kid is going to be looking for the things that a 30-year-old me is, and it's not like they have to.
