Review of Dazed and Confused (1993) by Derence R — 28 Jun 2011
This is Richard Linklater's now cult classic time capsule of the good ol' days- that is, high school, 1970s America. It's a wonderful, mellow little film that takes its time and says what it needs to say in episodic bursts, using characters who are all flawed but who all are trying to live in the moment.
It is both affectionate and critical, and it has a good sense of humor about the culture it reminisces about as well as a great affection. The whole cast is memorable (could this be Matthew McConaughey's one great role?), but it is the smaller and meeker characters like Wiley Wiggins who emerge as the film's great heroes, characters who learn something big in small ways.
Boasting one of the greatest compiled rock soundtracks and a naturalistic and youthful pace, 'Dazed and Confused' becomes a great film straight out of two separate decades.
