Review of Days of Wine and Roses (1963) by Allan C — 01 Sep 2012
Heavy handed story about a couples downward spiral into alcoholism but it's brilliantly acted by stars Jack Lemmon and Lee Remick and moody, tense direction by Blake Edwards make this one a classic to remember.
Remick and Lemmon have some truly heartbreaking moments in the film, in much the same way that Faye Dunaway and Mickey Rourke did in the similarly alcohol fueled "Barfly". The film was cutting edge at the time, making the similar "Lost Weekend" seem tame by comparison.
There's also a terrific score by Henry Mancini, which all adds up to a highly memorable film.
