Review of Days of Thunder (1990) by John M — 18 May 2009
Eightiestastic. So what's this movie about? Racing. Specifically, Tom Cruise racing. It has a standard love story, rivalry and the temper issues of a hot shot, but it's still just about racing, and that really is the biggest setback.
You can only do so much with a racing movie, especially in the NASCAR sense. You can do close ups on the face, close ups on the rear view mirror, cars bumping into each other and cars crashing. That's about it.
Much like the sport, it's very repetitious. There's a lot of overacting going on here, mostly by Tom Cruise... but it's pretty amusing because he's taking a movie about NASCAR so seriously.
It is pretty funny in a cheese ball kind of way, but the third act takes too long to get moving.
