Review of Days of Thunder (1990) by Tyler W — 14 Oct 2014
Ok, this movie is just entertaining. I don't know how to describe my appeal to it. It's just entertaining. It's funny, dramtic, thrilling and fun.
Tom Cruise gives a good performance as Cole Trickle. He's dramatic, hilarious, cocky... it's a whole whack of Tom Cruise performances rolled into one. Which is what I like. Cockyness kinda dominates his character though, but the drama is just as prominent. He verges on being an asshole in some parts, which kinda turned me off, but when the fianl race came, I got back into it.
Nicole Kidman gives a solid performance. She's a great actress. She can be everything her no ex-husband is... dramatic and funny. She humanizes Cole and gives him something to race for, which I commend. I love humanizing dick characters. Another good racing film example of this is "Cars". McQueen is such an asshole, and Sally humanizes him. Except that film didnt curse or have hookers disguised as Highway Patrol Officers.
Robert Duvall is great as always. I love him in any role. When I watched this, his character of Otto from the remake of "gone in 60 Seconds' come rushing back to me. I see that guy here, the car-buff wanting to pass his knowledge on. I love that stuff.
The racing is good stuff. You may think the classic Jeff Dunham line "They're making a left turn..." dominates the racing, especially since it's Nascar, but the way it's shot, the interior shots, the pit crew, it all makes it more thrilling.
It's a good movie. Maybe not a buy, depending on your taste, but I enjoyed it, and will definately get it sometime, but for no more than five bucks. It's not that good.
