Review of Days of Heaven (1978) by Donovan D — 26 Nov 2007
Terrence Malick's masterpiece. Day of Heaven is the most literary of narrative films; at once poetic, philosophical and questioning. The film presents an allegorical tale that challenges the modernist belief of history as progress, with the invasion and destruction of nature by industrialization and the desperation created by class struggle.
With this film, Malick has created America's greatest rural tragedy - the cinematic equivalent of the Great American Novel.
