Review of Days of Heaven (1978) by Brad G — 26 Jul 2009
Terrence Mallick makes slow movies. Not a putdown-a fact. The film is only 94 minutes long, but Mallick makes use of every damn second. Terrence Mallick also make beautiful movies, and I would have to say that Days of Heaven is by far his most beautiful.
The wheat fields. The farm hands. The Locust Plague. The Fire. Every shot can be framed and put on your wall as art. Just gorgeous. You know, I kinda get the feeling that Paul Thomas Andersonâ??s There Will Be Blood wanted to be Days of Heaven.
Iâ??m not exactly sure about some of the plot points-why do Richard Gere and Brooke Adams hide their romantic relationship? Do they plan the con from the beginning? Not sure. But I dig this film. I love the early 1900s.
I love the happened upon con game. I love the dark places the film goes. I love the childâ??s narration, Linda Manz is phenomenal. I love how Richard Gere is a bit of a dandy but a dolt at the same time.
I love Sam Shephardâ??s terminal and sad farmer. And I love Ennio Moriconeâ??s score, especially the opening theme. VF.
