Review of Days of Heaven (1978) by Stephen E — 03 May 2012
Beautiful. Days Of Heaven is an overwhelming film. Malick goes even further than he did with Badlands five years earlier, precisely directing a period piece which tells the story of a love triangle between a poor, working couple and their wealthy employer.
The story is not fascinating or new, despite the extraordinary performance from Linda Manz as the young girl who tags along with the couple wherever they go. What makes the movie so visionary is of course Malick's astonishing images and photography.
Nearly all of the film is shot at either sunrise or sunset, making for a constant effect of daylight without harsh, distracting sunrays, and the sky having a cloudy, mystical feel to it. Watch this film and be amazed.
