Review of Days of Heaven (1978) by Tor M — 29 Mar 2013
A terrific film and a visual masterpiece. So many great images, amazing cinematography and a simple but still quite original story. It felt new, at least a mid-nintees film. The acting is good, but not super impressive. Nothing more is needed though, this is a timeless flick and you will watch it for it's beauty, not the acting. The fantastic score from Morricone meeds a mention too. I like the colors here, the open nature and especially the fire scene. Few poor scenes, but that one will stick with me. The "magic hour"-filming is really fascinating and the two years Malick spent editing this piece is pretty wild too. The only thing I don't like here is the setting. The life of the 1910's is quite boring stuff to be honest.
One of the best shot films I've seen. See it if you often care as much for the imagery as you do for the story.
8.5 out of 10 years of editing.
