This film is trying to enlight the audience to the fact that french soldiers from the colonies were exploited as cannon fodder, not giving them any credit for their sacrifice when the war is over and treating them in a racist way.
I think maybe only the french audience, including former president Chirac, could be surprised that this was the case...
Since this is the only point of perspective in this film, it becomes pretty meaningless. I have not learnt much I didn't know, or couldn't have guessed...
