Review of Daybreakers (2010) by Andrea M — 03 Mar 2011
TOO. MUCH. GORE. This film's intriguing premise and concept are lost in the blood. The Spierig brothers bring a spin to the vampire legacy that sounds cool but what are they saying with this film? I didn't get much from it because the screen was so red, I couldn't figure the inner core.
There are elements of doing what's right, regaining humanity, facing death, rebirth, and such themes, but I think the power of this film is lost too much in the carnage of the times. I think the transformations of the vampires should have been explored a little more.
Up the stakes a little with how this world could end. These creatures, the vampires, and the humans didn't but heads too much in terms of moving the story, but the issue was clouded at times. The gruesome scenes are just too much and sometimes cheesy.
All in all, interesting, but execution fails to deliver to an audience why we're watching this, other than some chills and thrills.
