Review of Daybreakers (2010) by Danny R — 29 Jan 2012
A fascinating unique twist to the vampire genre, In the year 2019 earth's population is up against a vicious plague that has transforming most of the world's population into vampires which are draining the world of an increasingly precious resource human blood.
Humans are hunted and farmed for blood, but their numbers are so low that they now face extinction. Humans are so scarce in fact that they account for less than 5% of the world's population and the blood supply that vampires need to survive has less than a month left in reserve.
If a vampire begins to starve they turn into a hideous bat-winged creature that cannot reason or communicate, and will prey on vampires and humans alike. Dr. Edward Dalton, played with a brilliant intensity by Ethan Hawke who is a vampire and hematologist, he also is a human sympathizer who works for a powerful pharmaceutical firm, run by Charles Bromley, Sam Neill in a deliciously sinister performance.
One night Dr. Dalton gets into his car and has a accident with a group of fleeing humans, led by Audrey Bennett nicely played by Claudia Krarvan, after Edward helps them escape from their vampire stalkers, Audrey introduces him to a outlaw Lionel "Elvis" Cormac, played with a real gusto by Willem Dafoe who was a former vampire that has found away to become human again; together they will try to fine a cure before it is to late for the human race.
Edge of your seat suspense with great action sequences, stunning visual effects and striking cinematography by Bon Nott. Excellent direction by the Spierig brothers, Michael & Peter. A good, well-crafted horror film.
Highly Recommended.
