Review of Day Watch (2006) by Ken B — 17 Jun 2008
It's summer blockbuster season, so I decided to finally see the second chapter in the biggest Russian film series ever. The first film, Night Watch, got a surprise US release back in 2005 and I was lucky enough to catch it in theaters.
Day Watch, the much anticipated sequel is stylish and fun, but it feels rushed. There is also a major problem that occurs because the movie fails to really set up the rules for the world. It contributes to the really confusing moments in the film.
This, combined with a couple totally unacceptable tangents and scenes, prevents Day Watch from matching the first movie and puts it square in the campy catagory. The action is still pretty exciting and the film is constantly interesting.
It'll be interesting to see Bekmambetov's American debut "Wanted", but the trailers make it look amazingly similar in style and concept. Night Watch is a better movie, but Day Watch is equally fun.
