Review of Day of the Woman (1978) by Mike C — 05 Jul 2008
This is a tough one for me to really get behind. This film walks a line between shock and empowerment as it focuses on the absolutely brutal rape of a vacationing author over the course of a few hours (don't sit down thinking this is going to be something glossed over - this is shown in detail from differing points of view for a good chunk of the film) and her transformation to a woman rebuilt as she ultimately gets her revenge on her tormentors.
An argument for women's rise to forces to be reckoned with is fine with me. The speed with which it happens (she seems to wake up and has this grandiose plan ready to go, from the mentally-challenged first victim all the way to the sliced-and-diced fourth and final victim) and the weak production values undermine any "oomph" it might have had.
Shocking? No doubt (even I found myself uncomfortable in this one). Sloppy? Very much so. Worth seeing? Perhaps, if only to see a slice of cinema that many would unjustly have erased from public consumption.
