Review of Day of the Woman (1978) by Miquel J — 22 Feb 2010
It's a great revenge story that unfortunately will always be lost in the gratuitous nudity and rape scenes. If it was held back - say in the realm of Last House on the Left - it would be more acceptable, but the scenes last so long and are so repulsive that most people won't finish the film.
(Ebert's review stated that many people walked out of the film when he watched it, but at the same time there were families there with children watching it --- back in the late 70's no less. Weird).
What really makes this movie to me is the way she's able to get back at her attackers, the best being the tub scene. Wish they updated this with less violent sexual assault (there are three detailed rapes in this movie) to really turn it into a greater film. Not to say Meir Zarchi's vision isn't powerful, because it is, but it just won't be seen by many people.
