Review of Day for Night (1973) by Brock B — 02 Sep 2008
I was expecting it to be good, but I wasn't prepared for the level of genius played out in this movie.
Its beauty is in the way it can be so forthright about the construction of artifice -- and while it pops back and forth from the frame of "story" to the frame of "real world," Truffaut kicks us off-balance every so often by ever-so-subtly reminding us that even the "real" stuff is still just a movie.
The premise is not Earth-shattering, but it's the execution of it that constantly surprises, that makes you laugh and makes you think, and no matter how many movies you've seen, Day for Night makes the idea of watching movies feel fresh again.
