Review of Day for Night (1973) by Sam R — 22 Oct 2008
Movies about movie production are always a little weird since they draw attention to the artifice of the whole cinematic process. It can get really trippy if you start to think about what as going on behind the scenes of the "behind the scenes" movie; it gets harder to comprhend even than trying to figure out the mechanics of time travel. But I digress.
La Nuit americaine does a good job of both showcasing and making light of the movie making culture. It hovers just on the boarder between one of those "making of" featurets and an actual comedy plot. It's also worth mentioning that it's probably the least artisy and most accessible French movie I've ever seen, and a nice jumping on point for an American looking to get into some real European cinema. Definitely a worth while ride.
