Review of Day for Night (1973) by Paul N — 10 Jan 2009
Absolutely brilliant, hilariously satirical look behind the curtain at the everyday madness of filmmaking. Truffaut makes so many dead-on observations that come only from experience, nailing the pain, chaos, confusion, conflict and ultimate near-masochistic joy of the "creative process".
He's also pretty good in a supporting acting role, playing -- of course -- the director trying to hold the whole shebang together. (Narcissistic? Who cares. I was having too much fun, and he's quite affable.
) The whole thing moves at a breathless pace, featuring a cast of wacky and insecure, yet instantly likeable, characters who live to create silver screen dreams. Stacks of fun.
