Review of Dawn of the Planet of the Apes (2014) by Keshav P — 17 May 2015
This film is on the same level of its predecessor mainly due to Andy Sekis' fantastic performance as Caesar. This guy should be getting awards for his acting but he probably won't get the big awards because people still don't appreciate acting when CGI is involved.
But it doesn't matter, because Caesar was amazing in this movie just like he was in the last movie. Toby Kebbell also does a great job in this movie. He plays Koba, a bonobo who hates humans a lot more than Caesar does.
Their dynamic is what made the movie for me. This movie has everything from amazing action to political intrigue. One thing that the last movie did better was the portrayal of the human characters. In the last one, the humans were much more full fleshed and developed unlike in this one where they're simply present as a means to advance the movie.
But, this was meant to be an ape movie and all the actors who play apes are marvelous in their respective roles.
