It's does many things right, and I liked the emotional depth that I wasn't expecting in this kind of movie. The aspect that I couldn't get past was stupid characters doing stupid things. There were two antagonist characters, one ape and one human, that did things that were ridiculously stupid and short sighted.
And yes there are myopic people in real life, but when the entire storyline of humans and apes going to war relies on these two characters doing those stupid things it cheapens the movie.
