Review of Dawn of the Planet of the Apes (2014) by Simeon M — 30 Jul 2015
This movie was thoroughly disappointing, and completely unnecessary. The buildup is incredibly slow, over an hour passes with extremely little happening. Even though the setting is unique, the formula is all too familiar. Tensions between group A and B. Good leaders on each side try to resolve conflict peacefully, until jerks in each group set things off and it escalates to war.
Perhaps the worst part was how Caesar admits that apes (like humans) are also capable of good AND evil. Then in the end, he tells Koba "you are not ape." - Whhaaaaat? That completely undoes everything you just said about ape and human potential for good and evil!
In the end, nothing has changed. The previous film established the beginnings of Ape society and the downfall of humanity. This film adds little to that arc, and we're no closer to humans becoming the slaves that we see in the original Planet of the Apes.
