Review of Dawn of the Planet of the Apes (2014) by Daniele C — 17 Nov 2015
A really good story. It is hard to make a serious movie about talking apes if you're not in the 70's, but the new franchise shows that the way you tell something is as important as the story being told.
"Rise" and now "Dawn" have their strength in being credible movies, dwelling on the evolutionary significance of the apes and the relation among species, which is where the Tim Burton's reboot from 2001 miserably fails, focusing more on funny haircuts and improbable love stories.
The dowside is the choice of the main "human" actor, Jason Clarke, which provides a dull, cold, inexpressive performance. A stone brick could have performed better. There are also some convenient plot gimmicks that could have been avoided, together with some character clichè, but overall the quality is pretty good.
I can't wait for the third installment!
