3 1/2 stars. Everyone thinks this movie is better than Rise, but I think they are equal. Also, they are two fairly different movies. Rise is a smart, visually groundbreaking, upbeat philosophical movie with some good action sequences. Dawn is a smart, visually groundbreaking, dark action movie with some good philosophical messages. As you can see, they are very similar, yet their deliveries are very different. Rise is definitely the most emotionally resonant film, using most of its violence in un-entertaining animal cruelty and using most of its runtime for character development and emotion, saving the actual rise of the planet of the apes for the end credit sequence. The big difference between the two, even though they both had philosophical messages that were front and center, is that Rise forces the audience to notice them in an ALMOST uncomfortable way. Dawn puts them out there, but lets audiences choose whether thy want to notice them or just bask in the visuals.

As for Dawn itself, it is an incredibly well made film, and a great relief from the normal mindless action films of the summer. This one is trying to be a real film, just like Rise, and, just like Rise, it greatly succeeds. It's plot is loosely based on 1974's Battle for the Planet of the Apes, the fifth and final film in the original series. This film is not as heavy on character development, but (wisely) chooses to spend that time on great visuals and action, as well as a very intriguing plot. The acting from the humans is respectable, but the apes are FANTASTIC, especially Andy Serkis, who definitely deserves an Oscar for at least one of his roles.

All in all, this is a fun, emotional, and beautiful film. The idea to film in a real forest was brilliant, and was a great substitute to Rise's obviously fake trees. This film, in my opinion, ties with Rise to be the second best Planet of the Apes movie. Also, the film forces an obligatory sequel, so be on the lookout for an action-packed conclusion.
