Review of Dawn of the Planet of the Apes (2014) by Jak-Luke S — 23 Jul 2017
Reeve's film is a spectacular masterpiece. It combines the subdued, character driven aspects of its predecessor and escalates them with far more at stake and a world so beautifully bleak and haunting, yet has the potential to both coexist in peace.
It's parallel plot of both ape and man trying to just exist and live is astonishingly immersive and engaging, making its audience root for both sides but on the horizon only one can suffice, never giving its audience the decision but playing seeds of the inevitable.
Performances are superb, Serkis deserved at least an Academy Award Nomination for his portrayal of torn leader, Caesar. His emotional range and prowess are wonderfully caught, as is the human side of things with Oldman, Clarke and Russell bringing the much needed human element to the story in which the film desperately depends on to create a rich emotionally stricken epic.
