Review of Dawn of the Dead (2004) by Jarrett M — 01 Jan 2012
This is probably at the top end of a list of the best remakes, and is also a good film in it's own right. This version of the film is a very different animal than the original movie and to compare them is like comparing the first Alien film to Aliens.
Both are great movies, but for different reasons. This film presents us again with a group of people trying to survive inside a shopping mall, but this time we get a greater group dynamic, new and interesting minor characters, and 'fast' zombies.
While this film lacks the undercurrent of a social commentary, it cranks the action up considerably and has one of my favorite opening sequences commited to film. The story is basically the same as the original film, but there is considerably more characters and a considerably faster pace.
The cast are all terrific and I loved the inclusion of a cameo by Ken Foree, who played Peter in the original film. Definately recommended for any zombie or horror fan, and even some action movie fans may love this.
Plus, this also has one of the most unsettling scenes I've seen in a zombie movie. The birth scene and resulting baby always get under my skin a bit.
