Review of David Brent: Life on the Road (2016) by David L — 31 Aug 2016
I'm a huge fan of Gervais. Have loved most of his work. What I really like about him is the humanity that comes through with the characters he writes/performs. I just buy what he's selling, metaphorically speaking.
Initially I was excited, yet sceptical as Merchant had no involvement, and my preferred choice of Gervais work was when Merchant was on board too. But mostly excited because David Brent is such a fantastically realised character, even if the plot was poor at least it'd be pretty certain the characterisation would be spot on.
Having seen the film last night, both the plot and characterisation were spot on. I left the cinema with my friend and we agreed it was good- a 3.5 out of 5. But having slept on it, and revisiting the experience today, I have to say I think it's actually a 5 star film.
There's nothing like it out there. It's such a strong study into the psyche of a man going through a mid life crisis that it's more than just a film. It's an education into loneliness, bullying, depression, vulnerability.
.. It's a fascinating film, which punches an emotional curve ball right at the end. It's a triumph for Gervais.
