Review of David Brent: Life on the Road (2016) by Ryan G — 15 Oct 2016
"There's a little David Brent in all of us" I mused to my friend as we walked out of the cinema.
"Or, more accurately, we all know someone a bit like David Brent" he replied.
Perhaps both are true. I can remember connecting with The Office 12 years ago because I had similar bosses. This time around, there was a little bit of the dreamer in David Brent, that I couldn't help but empathise with, or, dare I say, hope for?
Ricky Gervais always ran a tight rope with the Brent character, making him so loathsome at times, but having enough redeeming qualities to humanise. This made the second part slightly easier, which is how to complete the character arc, and give him a realistic redemption by the conclusion.
That made the Office special by the conclusion of the Christmas Special, and ultimately, the same arc is at play here, for David Brent the Rock Star. If you were a fan of the Office, then seeing that character arc at play again makes this worthy viewing. :).
