Review of Date Night (2010) by Nathan C — 11 Mar 2012
Who knew that one night in film-time can be so riotously funny? Mayhem such as this has never been more hilarious, and it's never felt better.
A boring, regular couple with kids takes a night off their routine to go to the Big Apple and have dinner. It's less-than-routine, as it snowballs from posing as a different couple to being on the run to nearly getting killed multiple times to trying to resolve the issue. Uh... yeah, not every night one goes throught that.
Steve Carell and Tina Fey and their brilliant comic timing as well as their quirky charms make the whole affair work. The ordinary factor helps spark the unusual vibe, punctuated by silly humor, intense action, and sweet romance. Extended cameos only add to the fun. Because it feels so real with the digital camerawork and diverse sections of New York, it pulls off the magical feeling for it just being one night. It's not afraid to show its seedier side too, though that comes at a price.
That price is having to sit through some painful gags that just did not work or plod along a by-the-numbers plot. It also feels remarkably shallow, not leaving too much of a mark upon all the nights I've spent watching movies. Ah well...
An explosive laughfest that's too explosive to be ignored, "Date Night" has a winning chaos abnout it to be a blast.
